The creation of this website-portfolio involved two steps:
Because I had never created a website before, I spent much time learning about HTML (HyperText Markup Language), the language (or coding) needed to create web pages. This proved difficult because the HTML varies according to desired effect and is placed before and after any text or image in order to determine its formatting (the font style, its size, whether it is boldened, italicized, bulleted, or justified, and where and how images are positioned). One must, therefore, be precise in executing and placing this coding. Omitting or incorrectly typing HTML could result in a webpage peppered with 'gibberish'. For those interested in what HTML looks like, click on the "Related Links and Sample Documents" to the right, and then subsequently, the "Sample HTML Page" link in the drop-down menu.
The layout was achieved by using a template from a CD accompanying a book on website creation. After downloading this template into my computer, I entered the text into boxes (or cells) and chose the font style, sizes, and colours along with the background colours I preferred. Of course, I encountered obstacles and made many mistakes along the way, but with perseverence, on-going reading, and experimentation, I learned a lot and applied what I learned. Depending on one's learning style and degree of experience, there is a wealth of information available in print and on the World Wide Web that makes this learning experience possible. For those interested in creating websites, click on the "Related Links and Sample Documents" link on the right, and then subsequently, the "Selected Academic Reading - Intro." and "Selected Academic Web Links - Intro." links in the drop-down menu.
As for determining the contents of this website-portfolio, I used the following criteria as my guides:
-
identifiying my intended audience and ensuring that information presented to them is accessible, comprehensible, and relevant
-
ensuring that each web page is simple, consistent, navigable, and visually attractive
-
ensuring that documents included are prefaced so that a context to which the audience can relate is established
-
presenting information that reflects evolution and critical reflection in my work as a student and professional
-
providing a forum in which the audience may offer feedback
To view the outline used to determine the content of this website-portfolio, click on the "Related Links and Sample Documents" link to the right, and then subsequently, the "Professional Portfolio Outline" link in the drop-down menu.
In keeping with the evolutionary nature of this website-portfolio, I encourage visitors to submit feedback as comments and suggestions help to improve this site's accessibility and effectiveness. To send feedback, click on the "Contact Me" link on the homepage. Anonymity is assured, though submissions will be edited for relevance and intelligibility. To view these comments, click on "Related Links & Sample Documents" to your right, and then subsequently, on the "Your Feedback" link in the drop-down menu.
