Teaching English for International Communication (TOEIC) - Introduction

The Teaching English for International Communication (TOEIC) preparatory course helps English-as-a-Second-Language students attain a high score in an actual TOEIC test. A high TOEIC test score is crucial for those looking for employment with multinational corporations in countries such as Korea and Japan where English-language skills are an asset. At Crown Language Institute (Toronto), students who take the TOEIC course:

  • develop a clear understanding of the format and components of the TOEIC test
  • study strategies to eliminate wrong answers and determine correct ones
  • take two complete practice tests (depending on the length of the course) and receive a sample TOEIC score
  • study TOEIC-related vocabulary
  • review advanced English grammar
  • receive plenty of practice exercises
  • attain their ideal TOEIC score

The TOEIC course is, by nature, a structured (textbook-based) course comprised of skills taught using a teaching-centred approach. Encorporating a more student-centred, self-directed approach to a TOEIC course is, therefore, challenging. This challenge is compounded by students' general expectations that a teacher-centred approach be used in conveying information; yet TOEIC textbooks consistently advise that listening and reading skills be acquired contextually and not through rote learning alone. Students retain new vocabulary and expressions better by using them in their daily interactions with other English speakers. Encorporating discussion in a TOEIC course, for instance, may achieve this end by helping students to:

  • understand and use new vocabulary contextually
  • acquire familiarity with the use and meanings of collocations and idioms
  • improve their listening and speaking skills
  • develop self-confidence when asserting their points-of-view
  • learn about other points-of-view
  • develop critical thinking skills
